Convert JPG to AVIF

In controlled benchmarks, AVIF achieves roughly 50% file size reduction compared to JPEG at the same visual quality (measured by SSIM, a metric that quantifies structural similarity as perceived by the human eye). A 500 KB JPEG might become a 250 KB AVIF with identical perceived quality.

For compression efficiency, yes. AVIF is ~20-30% more efficient than WebP. However, WebP has broader browser support (97% vs 93%). Many sites use AVIF with a WebP fallback in HTML picture elements.

Re-encoding any lossy format introduces generation loss. However, AVIF's superior compression means you can use a lower quality setting and still match or exceed the original JPEG's visual quality while being much smaller.

AVIF uses AV1 compression, which is computationally complex. It trades encoding speed for compression efficiency. In FastEdit, typical photos encode in 2-5 seconds via WebAssembly.
