How to Add Captions to Video Online
Walkthrough
- 01
Open FastEdit
Go to fastedit.net. The editor runs in your browser and does not require an account or installation.
- 02
Drop your video
Drag and drop your MP4, MOV, WebM, GIF, APNG, or animated WebP file. FastEdit loads the media locally on your device.
- 03
Add a text overlay
Open the Overlay tool, choose Text, and enter your caption, label, or callout. The text appears on the video preview.
- 04
Position and style the caption
Drag the caption into place, resize it, and adjust font size, color, alignment, and opacity so it stays readable over the video.
- 05
Set caption timing
Use the overlay region on the timeline to control when the caption appears and disappears. Add multiple overlays for multiple caption moments.
- 06
Export the captioned video
Trim or crop if needed, choose MP4, WebM, GIF, WebP, or APNG output, then export. The final file downloads without a FastEdit watermark.
Small things worth checking
- Keep captions short and readable. Large, simple text works better on phones than long sentences.
- Use strong contrast between text and video. If the background changes, move the caption or add a second timed overlay in a clearer spot.
- Place captions after cropping to the final aspect ratio so text does not end up outside the visible frame on social platforms.
- Use the timeline for callouts that should appear only while a feature, button, or moment is visible.
- For short looping clips, export as GIF or animated WebP. For standard video sharing, export as MP4.
