Compress Video for WhatsApp
How to finish the file
- 01
Open FastEdit
Go to app.fastedit.net on your phone or computer. No app to install; it runs in Safari or Chrome on mobile too, though large encodes are easier on desktop.
- 02
Load your video
Drag and drop or tap to select your video. Works with supported video formats such as iPhone MOV, Android MP4, and WebM. The file stays on your device.
- 03
Set fit-to-size to 16MB
Enable fit-to-size and enter 16MB. FastEdit calculates the optimal bitrate to hit this target while maximizing quality.
- 04
Trim to the key moment
WhatsApp videos are meant to be short. Trim to the essential part: a 15-30 second clip at 16MB looks great. Longer videos get more compressed.
- 05
Export as MP4
Export as MP4 with H.264 for maximum WhatsApp compatibility. Then share the file directly to WhatsApp.
Benefits
- Fit-to-size targets exactly 16MB, no failed sends or WhatsApp re-compression.
- Better quality than letting WhatsApp compress for you. WhatsApp's built-in compression is aggressive and you have no control over it.
- Works directly on your phone browser, compress and send without transferring to a computer.
- No upload to any third-party server. Personal videos stay private on your device.
- Trim before compressing to maximize quality for the part that matters.
Compression Tips
- WhatsApp file size limit is 16MB for video sent as a file. Videos sent through the camera roll may be further compressed by WhatsApp.
- A 30-second video at 16MB gives roughly 4 Mbps bitrate at 1080p, very good quality. A 2-minute video at 16MB (1 Mbps) is acceptable at 720p.
- Pre-compressing with FastEdit gives better results than letting WhatsApp compress for you. WhatsApp's built-in compression is aggressive and uncontrollable.
- Use 720p for videos over 1 minute. Most phone screens display WhatsApp videos at well under 1080p anyway.
- iPhone videos record at 30-50 Mbps by default. Even light compression (to 5-10 Mbps) reduces file size by 70-80%.
Shrink the file, keep the quality in sight, and never hand over the original.
