APNG supports 24-bit color (16.7 million colors) with full 8-bit alpha transparency, while GIF is limited to 256 colors with binary (on/off) transparency. This means APNG animations have smoother gradients, no color banding, and anti-aliased edges. The tradeoff is larger file sizes.

Yes. All modern browsers, Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge, support APNG. Older browsers that don't understand the animation chunks will display the first frame as a static PNG image, which is a graceful fallback. Internet Explorer is the only notable holdout, and it's effectively dead.

Open your GIF in FastEdit and export as APNG. The conversion preserves timing and animation while upgrading to full-color depth. Note that the APNG file will typically be larger than the GIF because it stores more color information per frame.

APNG uses lossless compression, and full-color frames with alpha channels contain significantly more data than GIF's 256-color palette. To reduce size, lower the resolution, reduce the number of frames, or consider converting to animated WebP which offers lossy compression with similar visual quality at much smaller file sizes.
