YouTube Thumbnail & Image Sizes
YouTube thumbnails are one of the most important elements for video click-through rates. They must be 1280x720 pixels (16:9) in JPEG format under 2 MB. Channel art has a complex safe-area system where only the center 1546x423 pixels are visible on all devices. FastEdit helps you nail these dimensions and optimize file size every time.
Presets
Thumbnail
1280x720 JPEG / PNG Max 2 MB
Video thumbnail at 16:9 aspect ratio. Displayed in search results, recommendations, and the channel page. High contrast and readable text perform best.
Channel Art
2560x1440 JPEG / PNG Max 6 MB
Channel banner image. The safe area (visible on all devices) is the center 1546x423 pixels. Design outward from there for larger screens.
Profile Photo
800x800 JPEG / PNG Max 4 MB
Channel profile picture displayed next to videos, comments, and on the channel page. Shown as a circle across the platform.
YouTube Short
1080x1920 MP4 (H.264) Max 10 GB
YouTube Shorts. 9:16 vertical, up to 60 seconds. H.264 or H.265 codec recommended.
Video Upload
1920x1080 / 3840x2160 MP4 (H.264, AAC) Max 256 GB
Standard YouTube video. Upload at the highest resolution available (1080p or 4K). MP4 container with H.264 video and AAC audio. YouTube re-encodes all uploads, so higher quality source files produce better results.
Tips
- YouTube thumbnails with faces, bright colors, and large text (3-5 words max) consistently get higher click-through rates.
- Design channel art with the safe zone (center 1546x423) containing all critical content: everything outside may be cropped on mobile.
- Export thumbnails as JPEG for photos and PNG for graphics with text to minimize compression artifacts.
- Profile photos are displayed as small as 32px in comments: use a simple, recognizable image without fine detail.
