01
Open FastEdit
Go to fastedit.net. Everything runs in your browser. No download or sign-up needed.
02
Drop your MP4 file
Drag and drop your MP4 video onto the editor. The file loads locally and is never uploaded to a server.
03
Trim to the desired segment
Use the timeline to set your start and end points. Keep it short: 3-5 seconds is ideal for GIFs. Frame-accurate trimming lets you pick the exact frames you want.
04
Select GIF output and adjust settings
Choose GIF as the output format. Reduce the frame rate (10-15 fps works well for most content) and resize dimensions to manage file size. GIF file sizes grow quickly with resolution and frame count.
05
Preview and export
Check the preview and file size estimate, then click Export to download your GIF.
Tips
- Keep GIFs short (3-5 seconds) and small (under 480px wide) to avoid massive file sizes.
- Reducing frame rate from 30 fps to 10-15 fps cuts file size roughly in half with minimal visual impact for most content.
- Use fit-to-size if you have a specific file size limit to hit, such as 8MB for Discord or 15MB for Twitter.
- For better quality at smaller file sizes, consider exporting to WebP instead of GIF: it supports animation with much better compression.
- Frame deduplication automatically removes identical consecutive frames, which is common in screen recordings.
